Prof Mashiko Setshedi
First female Chair and Head of Medicine at UCT since the department's inception in 1920. Gastroenterologist, researcher, and mentor.
Professor Mashiko Setshedi became the first woman appointed as the St Anne's Trust Chair and Head of Medical Gastroenterology at Groote Schuur Hospital and UCT in 2018, and in 2024 the first female Chair and Head of Medicine since the department's inception in 1920.
She is a distinguished physician, researcher and educator with a particular interest in coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and the practical realities of gastroenterology in resource-limited South African settings.
Prof Setshedi is a passionate mentor and a regular voice in continuing medical education, both within the UCT system and through Medilearn's live broadcasts.
