
A/Prof Jessica Opie
After completing her internship in Windhoek, Jessica worked and studied in the UK, gaining wide clinical experience in Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology and Clinical Haematology, and qualifying as a Member of the College of Physicians (UK) in 1999. She completed her specialist training in Haematology Pathology in Sydney with the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia and returned to Cape Town in 2005. During the last 10 years, she led the NHLS tertiary academic laboratory in Groote Schuur Hospital and specializes haematology laboratory diagnostics, management, haematology teaching and training at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She was honoured to be appointed as Head of Haematology (Dept of Pathology) in 2018. She is an examiner for the College of Medicine of South Africa (Pathology) and enjoys teaching registrars at all levels. Her research interests include haematological complications of HIV and coagulation disorders, including in the setting of the COVID-19 pandemic.
