Professor Mashiko Setshedi became the first woman appointed as the St Anne’s Trust Chair and Head of Medical Gastroenterology at Groote Schuur Hospital/UCT in 2018, and in 2024 the first female Chair and Head of Medicine since the department’s inception in 1920. She is a distinguished physician, researcher, and educator with extensive experience in gastroenterology and hepatology. She has held leadership roles in clinical practice, research, and medical education, and has been recognized with multiple awards and fellowships. Her work spans both national and international initiatives, and she continues to contribute to research, teaching, and mentorship in medicine.
