Prof. Bridget Hodkinson, Head of Rheumatology
Professor Bridget Hodkinson is a South African physician and rheumatologist trained at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in Soweto, with a research fellowship completed in France. She now leads the busy rheumatology unit at Groote Schuur Hospital, University of Cape Town. She teaches undergraduate and postgraduate students, is training rheumatology fellows and is supervising postgraduate projects at Masters and PhD level. Her research interests, with international collaborators in Sweden and the Netherlands, focus on health-related quality of life and comorbidites of chronic rheumatic diseases including systematic lupus erythematous, spondyloarthritis and gout, about which little is published from sub- Saharan Africa. She is the senior author on the recently published SARAA Guidelines for the management of RA, axial and peripheral SpA and biologic therapies, and is motivated to improve the standard of care for persons with musculoskeletal problems in both state and private health-care sectors.
